  • “The humble GIF has had a big year: it turned 25 in June, and was the preferred file format during the recent presidential debates. Now, a new honor has been bestowed upon it — Oxford University Press has dubbed GIF the word of the year in the US, beating out YOLO.”
    — ‘GIF’ is the Oxford University Press word of the year in the US (via thisistheverge)

  • Everywhere I’ve Been: Data Portraits Powered by 3.5 years of data and 2.5 million GPS Points

Data visualizations by Aaron Parecki capturing years of collected GPS information:

These are images of map generated entirely from GPS logs gathered by various versions of the Geoloqi sample application for iPhone and Android for the past 3.5 years. Once gathered, the data was run through a custom script that projects the GPS logs onto a 2D image plane. There is a little bit of logic to smooth out the lines and remove some (but not all) GPS noise.

Approximately one GPS point was recorded every 2-6 seconds when I was moving, and these images represent about 2.5 million total GPS points. Collectively, they represent a data portrait of my life: everywhere I’ve been and the places I’ve been most frequently. The map is colored by year, so you can see how my footprint changes over the years, depending on where I live.

It is a year since the earthquakes and tsunami hit Japan. Here is a video seeing what has happened at Fukushima, and messages from people affected who wish to thank the people around the world who came to help.

  • One Year Performance 1980—1981 by Tehching Hsieh

Artist captures self-portrait every hour, every day, for a year … from 1980 to 1981.

For one year, from April 11, 1980 through April 11, 1981, Hsieh punched a time clock every hour on the hour. Each time he punched the clock, he took a single picture of himself, which together yield a 6 minute movie. He shaved his head before the piece, so his growing hair reflects the passage of time.

  • Crouching Digital Tigers Celebrate Chinese New Year - Sydney

In a wonderful fusion of ancient Asian art forms and modern sensibilities, two massive origami lanterns in the form of tigers, will help Sydney citizens and visitors celebrate the Lunar or Chinese New Year. February 14 will mark the start of the Year of the Tiger, but the two crouching giants will remain at Customs House from February 11 to March 14, 2010.

The lanterns are 2.5 meters high and more than 7 meters long and they are lit by low-energy LED lights. As is fitting in soccer-mad Australia, the felines are not just idly posing, they are playing soccer in celebration of the FIFA soccer world cup. The tigers, commissioned by Customs House to raise awareness about the endangered status of tigers, were designed by Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) with offices in Sydney and Stuttgart,  Germany. - Bill Tikos
