  • Abstract Christmas tree sparks protests in Brussels

An updated version of a post made earlier today, now with a video from BBC News

A minimal voxelesque Christmas tree with projection mapping and a staircase to view from it’s top hasn’t gone down well with some …

Thousands of people have signed a petition against an abstract light installation replacing the traditional Christmas tree in Brussels city centre.

More than 11,000 signatures have been gathered in the online petition and a Facebook page attacking the new feature has been launched.

Critics accuse officials of opting for the installation for fear of offending non-Christians, especially Muslims.

    Maddy Savage reports.

A minimal voxelesque Christmas tree hasn’t gone down well with some … via BBC News:

Thousands of people have signed a petition against an abstract light installation replacing the traditional Christmas tree in Brussels city centre.
More than 11,000 signatures have been gathered in the online petition and a Facebook page attacking the new feature has been launched.
Critics accuse officials of opting for the installation for fear of offending non-Christians, especially Muslims.
But the mayor’s office said it was part of a theme this year of “light”.
Traditionally, a 20m (65ft) pine tree taken from the forests of the Ardennes has adorned the city’s central square, the Grand Place.
This year, it has been replaced with a 25m (82ft) construction, though smaller real Christmas trees still decorate the square, a spokesman at the mayor’s office said.
The city’s website said the new “tree” was one of five “light” installations around the Grand Place this year, offering visitors the chance to climb to the top and enjoy “beautiful views” of the city.
Tourism councillor Philippe Close at the mayor’s office said the aim was to show off the “avant-garde character” of Brussels by blending the modern and the traditional, to produce something new and different.

  • Pixel Vase Casting Machine

Julian F Bond has made a sculpture tool to create clay vases with a blocky pixel / voxel like exterior. Video embedded below:

Julian Bond’s pixel vases are produced using a mould that is made up of over 1300 individual plaster sticks, measuring 10*10mm, which are able to be moved individually to form unique shapes. This is unlike a normal slip casting mould in that the mould is not fixed. Once the user is happy with the design, clay slip is poured into the mould. The cast vessel is then removed and fired. The technique allows rapid manufacturing of individual ceramic objects; the simplicity of the machine also means that someone that has no experience in ceramics can use it to produce their own pieces. • Red People Art-Constructor

Russian voxel-man public sculpture project. Via Collacubed:

The Red People project, created by Andrey Lublinskiy and Maria Zaborovskaya of the Pprofessors art group, is a modular system used to assemble an anthropomorphous character, sometimes large, other times small, out of 13 wooden blocks. Working in practically any context and integrated therein, these Red Men have become a sort of viral phenomenon around Moscow and its environs. So much so, that they have become stars of comics and political debates, and are slowly making their way across the world.

With inspiration from, and a nod to, cult artists such as Malevich, Rodchenko, Bruskin, Giacometti, Haring and Gormley, the Pprofessors have made these red contemporary icons pop up in the most unexpected of places, including sitting by a park fountain, scootering around the streets of Moscow, or sitting in the middle of a shopping center. After their exhibit in 2010 at the Gridchinhall Gallery, a few of the men have become permanent fixtures on the grounds, with one sitting atop the gallery’s building entrance.

WebGL browser based experimental demo turns Google Maps data into 3D cubic blocks. By Jaume Sánchez:

A representation of terrain, using cubic blocks to render google maps, with texture and elevation.

It shows your current location or a specific location, in different levels of zoom and sizes.

    Technology:
    WebGL, Fullscreen API, Canvas, Javascript.

Links and other information can be found here

It is also worth checking out Jamie’s other online demos. Also, this was found via roomthily’s interesting tumblr blog, which I can fully recommend.

  • The Humble Voxatron Debut

Voxatron, an indie game which is a voxel shoot-em-up, has been released. It’s Pay-What-You-Want (with optional charity donation), DRM Free, and currently has a map editor to make your own levels (with an enemy editor coming soon).

While I don’t think it will be as huge as Minecraft, the creative potential it has is HUGE:

Pay what you want. Voxatron will cost $15, but we’re letting you set the price!

Voxatron works great on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Be the first to tackle this voxel-based, old-school-gone-new platform shooter. Jump into the Voxatron alpha and shoot your way through twenty challenging areas filled with blocky baddies, destructible toys, and palliative powerups.

Get Voxatron’s future content and gameplay updates. As a customer of the Humble Voxatron Debut, you’ll receive access to all of Lexaloffle’s future updates to Voxatron: levels, characters, and more!

Level editor included, with monster creation tools on the way! After conquering the alpha adventure, check out the “BBS Levels” for instant-access to user-created content. Want to make your own voxel masterpiece? Voxde — the Voxatron level editor — is included with every purchase, granting you the ability to create mind-blowing new environments to share with the world. And soon, Lexaloffle plans to add monster creation tools for designing your own blocky bad guys to populate your creations.

You can support charity. Choose exactly how your purchase is divided: between the developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Child’s Play Charity. Also, if you like this deal, a tip to the Humble Bundle itself would be much appreciated!

  • Voxatron - Latest Preview Video and Alpha Release Announcement

I have been looking forward to a release for this - it is basically an arcade shooter, made entirely from voxels (a 3D version of a pixel). What is also interesting is that the environments are destructible, and their will be customization tools to create your own levels.

  • 3DTin - Browser-based simple 3D modelling tool
Works only in modern browsers such as Chrome or Firefox, but is very functional. Aimed at beginners or anyone who wants to make something basic, its free, but if you want to save your creations you need to make an account (which you sign up with your google account). With the free version, though, it is ad supported and creations are public. There is a premium version which, as I understand, is $5.
While you won’t be able to create anything intricate as the human heart with it, nor animate, it looks as if you can be creative with it. There are export features for some popular 3D file formats.
It even can be used as a voxel / pixel art editor:

Something else that is worth noting is that a start up called Origo is intening to market a 3D printer for kids, with this software recommended for object creation.
Try it out here: http://www.3dtin.com/

  • Douglas Coupland’s ‘Digital Orca’, voxelated with Sproxel

The SIGGRAPH conference was in Vancouver, British Columbia this year.  Both the city and the weather were beautiful, so it made for a great week.
A rather apropos sculpture named the Digital Orca by Douglas Coupland greeted convention goers just outside the center.  Some people refer to this as the “pixelized killer whale” but since you’re on this page, you probably know it’s not made of pixels, it’s made of voxels!  This seemed like just the job for Sproxel.  I took a few dozen reference photos before I headed back to the Bay Area, and after spending a couple hours with the results and Sproxel v0.4, I created what I believe to be a complete model of the Digital Orca.
More info on the tool, and the actual file for this piece, can be found here
