Dynamic Target Tracking Camera System
Fast object tracking camera demonstration, capturing and focusing at 1/1000th of a second - very impressive - video embedded below:
Via DigInfo:
This camera system can track very fast moving objects, keeping them in the center of the screen at all times. Currently under development by the Ishikawa Oku Lab. at the University of Tokyo, this latest version captures Full HD video and can be used outdoors.
“Ordinarily, to change the direction a camera faces, you move the camera mechanically. But in this system, it’s not the camera that moves, it’s the mirrors. This makes it possible to change where you’re looking really quickly. In this demonstration, we’re tracking a table tennis ball. The ball moves extremely fast, but this system can keep compensating for the ball’s motion, so the ball stays in the middle of the image.”
I wouldn’t be surprised to see some kind of music video made with this to arrive soon …

In a 48-Hour hackathon, London start-up GoCardless developed a computer-vision Pool game ball tracker to keep scores automatically with a simple webcam:
You can see how the project was developed on their website here

IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF ANY PICTURE INTERFERENCE, PLEASE ADJUST YOUR VIDEO RECORDER’S TRACKING CONTROL.
THIS WILL, IN MOST CASES, RECTIFY BOTH SOUND AND PICTURE QUALITY.

Pantomation (1977 - 1979) via VintageCG
Pantomation was a very early tracking chromakey system from the 1970s. Originally intended for music scoring, the system was adapted to other styles of performance art. While crude by modern standards, the concept was decades ahead of its time; it can reasonably be considered an early forebear of systems like Microsoft’s Project Natal (Kinect)

Beyond – Collapsible Input Device for Direct 3D Manipulation beyond the Screen by Jinha Lee
This is cool:
What would it be like to reach into a screen and manipulate virtual objects as in real world. We present Beyond, a novel collapsible input device for direct 3D manipulation. When pressed against a screen, Beyond collapses in the physical world and extends into the digital space of the screen, such that users can have an illusion that they are inserting the tool into the virtual space. Beyond allows users to directly interact with 3D media, avoiding inconsistencies of input and output without having to wear special glasses. Users can select, draw, and sculpt in 3D virtual space and seam- lessly transition between 2D and 3D manipulation. We de- scribe detailed interaction techniques, implementation and application scenarios focused on geometric design and prototyping.
Super Mario Brothers by Andreas Heikaus
Super Mario Brothers …. in a tracking shot … on an outside wall. Its long, but you get the idea of it quickly.
This video was part of my Bachelor thesis at the University of Applied science and art Hannover. The Super Mario Bros. game, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, is not longer bound to the television size and get interactive with a new environment. The emphasis of my thesis is on the matchmoving work. It is the process of matching CG elements into live-action footage.
