First animated GIF sent into Deep Space
Contribution by Kim Asendorf for the Lone Signal METI (Messaging Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) experiment, entitled ‘Humans watching Digital Art’:
My message will be part of the first beam into deep space on Tuesday 18th June and will consist of an animated GIF.
Lone Signal’s first interstellar target is Gliese 526 and is 17.6 light years from the Earth. Gliese 526 is identified as a potentially habitable solar system in The Catalog of Nearby Habitable Systems. This system’s position in the sky, as well as its relatively close proximity to the Earth, makes it an ideal choice as Lone Signal’s first target.
People from Gliese 526 will be able to see “Humans watching Digital Art” in 17.6 years.
Space Oddity
Cover version of famous David Bowie song recorded on the International Space Station, performed by Commander Chris Hadfield.
It is something special :)
Animated GIF in 3D
Webtoy plays any animated GIF in 3D space in your browser, playing each frame spatially and sequentially from each other. You can use the mouse to move around and change the perspective of the animation.
The first animation above is an example used within the project. Using a GIF made from many images of a human body cross-section, the animation displayed is created from the sequence of the images - it is not a 3D model in itself, more a stack of animated frames next to each other.
You can use any GIF you have on your desktop - not all GIFs will be successful, but I tried out one of Max Capacity’s pieces which works well with the pixellated image - the effect is not too far off like a lenticular postcard.
Put together by thespite, you can try it out here
Daniel Libeskind’s “Micromegas” (1979)
Series of drawings which have the impression of architectural style and chaotic geometry - via socks studio:
From a post on the architectural forum “Pushpull Bar”:
Early in his career Libeskind produced two suites of drawings which reflected his thinking about the nature of architectural space: Micromegas and Chamberworks. Developed from his interest in geometry, Micromegas could be considered an alternative blueprint, whilst Chamberworks seems to explore the interaction between architecture and music, deeply rooted in his background and arguably one of his greatest influences. Both are clearly the basis on which Libeskind’s theatrical, geometrically complex architecture was developed and it is remarkable how his vision, borne in these drawings, have been realised in his projects.
Anarchy Dance Theatre
Taiwanese dance group perform in specially designed interactive projected space created by UltraCombo to great effect - video below:
The collaboration project between Anarchy Dance Theatre and Ultra Combos focused on building up a new viewer centered performance venue. In this space all movements including the dancers’ and audience’s can be detected and interact with each other through visual effect. The audience is not merely watching the show but actively participating in it.

Waves by Daniel Palacios
Art installation from 2006 visualizes soundwaves with a rope and spinning motor:
A long piece of rope represents three dimensionally a series of waves floating in space, as well as producing sounds from the physical action of their movement: the rope which creates the volume also simultaneously creates the sound by cutting through the air, making up a single element.
Depending on how we may act in front of it, according to the number of observers and their movements, it will pass from a steady line without sound to chaotic shapes of irregular sounds (the more movement there is around the installation) through the different phases of sinusoidal waves and harmonic sounds.
These kinds of action-reaction influences applied to sound and space are the basis of this installation. Due to its particular features, a space has a way of relating with sound, understanding sound as a series of compressions and decompressions which move through the air, so that the geometry of the space itself and the elements in it will influence the movements of the sound and finally our perception of the sound; adding to this entire stationary system a chaos of infinite variables from the most minimal movement on our part.
Here is a video of it in action:
More information about the piece can be found at the artist’s website here.
Coloured Advertising Spaces
The images above are not taken from an art project, but are vintage photographs with highlighted areas to sell advertising space. From All My Eyes:
Tucked away in Duke University’s vast archive of outdoor advertising, is a small group of photos about the selling of outdoor ad space. In addition to the expected blank billboards and “your ad here” signs, are a handful of altered photographic prints, artifacts of the sales process.
