Destructables - A DIY site for projects of protest and creative dissent
Interesting site mainly for the artifacts it has uploaded, including “Egyptian pamphlet: Guide to Revolution (with translation)”, how to set up a bike to leave a paint trail, and “The Freedom Fighter’s Manual”, a (CIA pamphlet dropped over Nicaragua in 1983).
How To Share Google Reader Stories to Google Plus via Read Write Web
The article seems to borrow the idea by Scott Kingery, but could be useful to anyone using Google Reader and Google +
Google Plus is built around sharing, and one of Google’s best sharing services is missing: Google Reader. It’s the free RSS reader that lets anyone subscribe to any website’s feed, and it’s behind some of the most popular RSS client apps, like Feedly. But there’s no built in way to share articles from Google Reader with your circles on Plus. Fortunately, you can make one pretty easily. Here’s how.
These are the steps to add Google Plus as a service on your Google Reader. Once you’ve set this up, all you have to do to share an article is the bit in the last step.
What isn’t guaranteed, though, is how the post will be displayed (it may just be a link, or it could have an accompanying image + excerpt), and as Tumblr usually displays a bit funny on other platforms when sharing, it might not be a Tumblr to G+ solution.
Anyway, if you want to try it yourself, the instructions are here
How to Make a Salt Print via Dulce Photography
Alternative method for creating photographic prints - the first step requires table salt and water (but you will need Silver Nitrate and other chemicals later):
One of the classes I’m taking this semester is called Contemporary Photography, a class where we learn lots of alternative printing processes (same class I made Mr. Pinhole for). Well, I was recently assigned to teach and give the class a demonstration on the Salted Paper Process, or salt prints. I figured, why not share this information with all of you? … It’s actually quite simple, and something you can do from your own home! All it takes is a little table salt and a few chemicals…
Hacking QR Codes by Mr Reid
… or … potenitally a how-to to vandalise them (but it isn’t encouraged by the author) …
… QR codes have a security flaw — it’s not too difficult to turn one QR code into another with just a bit of OHP film and some Tippex.
You will need:
- A mobile phone with a QR code scanning application. I used Barcode Scanner.
- The free GIMP image manipulation software.
- Clear overhead projector (OHP) film.
- Tippex (or some way of printing in white).
How to put your logo in a QR code by Hack A Day
After getting my hands on the ISO 18004 specification for QR codes, I decided to try embedding the Hack A Day skull & wrenches inside a QR code. The tools I used were Photoshop, this QR code generator, and Microsoft Paint (I’ve never seen a program to edit individual pixels that has a better UI, so don’t laugh).
For this ‘how-to,’ I’m going to walk through the process of modifying a Version 6 QR code. The Version 6 QR code is 41 pixels square, and is a very good balance between the amount of data that can be presented and the physical size of the code itself. The graphic below shows what is absolutely required of a Version 6 QR code standard. In practice, what is actually necessary is a little different, but I’ll just go with the specs for now.

As Bit.ly have made their Pro service free, if you choose to, you can set up your own custom short-URL address. Sure, its vain like a personal number plate, but I though, why not.
Example: http://prsk.nl/lLq19O
Kevin Jagger (aka @KevinJagger) has posted intstructions on how to do this yourself:
For those interested, here are the step-by-step instructions on how to do it.
- Go to Bit.ly Pro and apply for a Pro Account. It is free but takes a couple of days for them to approve your account. Best to get that process started right away.
- Go to GoDaddy.com (full disclosure, this link goes to my affiliate page) and select a solid short URL (.ca and .me’s are good as they save an extra character from a .com - also available 3 to 4 letter .com’s are extremely rare).
- Once you have bought your new custom URL you need to direct it to Bit.ly. You do this by changing the “A Record” of the domain to redirect to Bit.ly. To do this…
- Log into your GoDaddy account.
- Under “Products” tab, select “Domains”, then “Domain Management”.
- Select the domain name that you want to use as your custom URL shortener
- Click “Manage Domain”
- Under “DNS Manager” click “Launch”
- Change the “A (Host)” to the following IP address: 168.143.174.97 (that will redirect to Bit.ly)
Give it a couple hours and you should be good to go. When you go to Bit.ly and have a URL shortened it will use your new custom URL instead of Bit.ly
There isn’t a convenient automatic way to use this custom URL in Tumblr’s automatic twitter posting. Either you shorten them manually, or use Twitterfeed, which can take your Tumblr RSS feed and can call your Bit.ly account with an API key. It is semi-automatic - it needs to call up the feed (which it does every hour unless you manually do so from the site), but adds terms to the URL address which isn’t neat or possibly representative of the content you are trying to share.
Well, this was my experiment for today - should you be interested in doing the same, I hope this is helpful.
Adding the Google +1 button to your Tumblr site is quick and easy.
- Choose which configuration of the +1 button you want: +1 Webmaster Configuration Tool
- Visit your Tumblr Dashboard, click on ‘Customize’
- Click on ‘Theme’ on the menu bar and enable custom HTML
- Copy the following code as required by Google and place it in the correct area:
<!— Place this tag in your head or just before your close body tag —>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js”></script>
- Then, copy this code:
<g:plusone></g:plusone>
- Place it before the {block:ContentSource} tag
- Click ‘Save’
Please let me know if this works for your Tumblr site. Any other tips & suggestions?
