roy lichtenstein’s meditation on art:
‘meditation on art’ is an exhibition devoted to the work of american pop artist roy lichtenstein on show at the triennale museum in milan. his work is part of an art historical tradition that reuses subjects employed by other artists. he was the first to evolve an aesthetic theory that could transform a copy into an original.
considered by many as a forerunner of ‘post modernism’, lichtenstein made use of images reproduced time and again in magazines and books, executing his works through a technique that imitated typographical printing.
the process he used signified transforming a copy into an original work of art. at first, he copied - making small but significant changes - reproductions of works taken from printed sources and projected them onto large canvases. this was how the artist gave his works and anonymous character. his images, are always two-dimensional and without any kind of chiaroscuro, differentiated from sculpture.
