  • Infinite Type Trooper

Interactive installation displays animated type from a vintage keyboard - video embedded below:

Infinite Type Trooper from lettersaremyfriends on Vimeo.

From Letters Are My Friends in Berlin comes an installation that enables you to experience their animated and generated Buchstabengewitter Typeface with a haptic tactile interface - an old Rheinmetall Typewriter from the 1920s. We used the Arduino based USB Typewriter Kit by Jack Zylkin to convert this machine into an USB keyboard and give it a long deserved upgrade after almost a century. The keys are send to a PC that is running the Buchstabengewitter vvvv-patch that animates the glyphs. We gonna use it as a realtime comment tool for talks and events.

  • Comic Sans Must Die

Part typographic generative degradation coding project, part wishful thinking, presented in Tumblr format by Antonio Roberts:

Love it or hate it, Comic Sans is one of the most popular fonts in the world.

Vincent Connare designed the font for Microsoft in 1995. He described it is best being used for “new computer users and families with children”. Despite this it has constantly been misused and can be seen everywhere from school letters, e-mails from government officials and even in documents about the discovery of the Higgs Boson.

Since it was unleashed on the world there have been multiple calls by designers for the font to be abolished completely, most famously by the Ban Comic Sans website.

Comic Sans Must Die is a project that satisfies every designer’s dream: to see Comic Sans die a slow and painful death. Every day the individual glyphs of Comic Sans will have their demise displayed for all to see.

Comic Sans Must Die is a project conceived by Antonio Roberts with code contributions from Richard Clifford.

  • Transits by Ursula Damm

Generative video uses footage of city viewpoints yet regains the traces of people and transport moving by - the effect is reminiscent of Marcel Dulchamp’s “Nude Decending a Staircase”. Embedded below is a segment from the film:

“transits” - generative video installation from resoutionable on Vimeo.

    [Google Translate:]

Transit is a video installation that was produced for the exhibition place of sensing House of Electronic Arts Basel.

The installation uses static video recordings of Aeschenplatz in Basel to record traces of passersby on an urban transportation hub and make visible in their characteristics. , A newly developed software (Author: Martin Schneider) understands the entire video frame than neural feature map (Kohonen map). Each pixel of the video image is stored and subsequently using special algorithms “remembers” or processed. On the one hand we wanted long lingering elements into the picture enroll, on the other hand has this vision and its own dynamics: colors attract and movements pushing pixels in the detected direction.

Tai Chi / 5 video artworks for the Framed digital art display

Using body motion captured from a Tai Chi master,
a series of impossible physical sculptures embodying the human spirit.
The abstract anthropomorphic forms only emerge through movement.

  • A Superstitious Fund

Experimental financial project uses a machine to trade on the stock market based on superstitious ‘lucky numbers’ it generates:

The Superstitious Fund Project is a live one year experiment where an uncanny algorithm or SUPERSTITIOUS AUTOMATED ROBOT will trade live on the stock market. The financial instruments it will be using will be spreadbetting on the FTSE 100.

The superstitious trading algorithm will trade purely on the belief of NUMEROLOGY and in accordance to the MOON. It will for example have the fear of the number 13, as well as generating its own beliefs and new logic for trading.

  • Electric Ikebana

Audio Visual 3D HTML5 generative piece put together by Douglas Coupland and Paul Humphries for Alcatel-Lucent, creates unique colourful polygon flower vases decorated with data particles:

The concept was to compose a musical track that interacts with telecommunications data of internet traffic and online activity, expressed in a visual manifestation.

Raw numerical data is visually translated into particles and their shape, colour, and quantity are determined by internet traffic volume and type.

It‘s the audio that initiates the coming together of the particles as they’re being driven by the music to build a digital form.

Each viewing is unique. This is due to the experience pulling in user‘s location and time of day while they control the point-of-view, fluidly moving around the environment.

The result is a creation that gives a voice and form to the online network, inspiring new possibilities of digital expression and electronic imaginings.

More info and links to start can be found here

EDIT: From Douglas Coupland’s twitter feed, regarding the algorithmic nursery song:

It changes every time you do it. Some of the lyrics are from Claude Shannon’s 1948 paper on Information Theory.

  • The Listening Machine
Online generative music project plays continuous composition based on analysis of twitter feed:

The Listening Machine is an automated system that generates a continuous piece of music based on the activity of 500 Twitter users around the United Kingdom. Their conversations, thoughts and feelings are translated into musical patterns in real time, which you can tune in to at any point through any web-connected device.
It is running from May until October 2012 on The Space, the new on-demand digital arts channel from the BBC and Arts Council England. The piece will continue to develop and grow over time, adjusting its responses to social patterns and generating subtly new musical output.

The music could be considered Modern Classical, and while at times it may be repetitive, a new approach can come at any time.
You can find out more about the project and listen to the ongoing piece here

  • On Journalism #2 Typewriter

Installation piece connects computer to typewriter that generates stories about journalists who have died since 1992. By Julian Koschwitz:

The typewriter installation «On Journalism #2 Typewriter» writes generatively constructed stories about all journalist who have been killed worldwide between 1992 and today based on the existing data of their lives as well as their published work. The individual stories are connected through common fields of coverage, places, professions and many other aspects. Besides the text the typewriter creates also images e.g. flags which are heavier distorted the more journalists got killed in that particular country.

The story is written endlessly on one endless piece of paper.
