  • Atlantics Vol. 3
Free eclectic electronic music compilation with something for everyone:
Atlantics Vol. 3 by Astro Nautico

One year ago from today on April 20th, 2012, we released Atlantics Vol. 2 - a sprawling collection of tracks by talented friends and artists from around the world. This year, we asked a completely different group of fresh faces to contribute, and the result is something special. Not nearly as ambitious in scope as the previous installment (although pretty damn close) Volume 3 is a more concise and understated compilation, but no less engaging by any means. Spanning genres as disparate as hi-fi footwork and grainy new wave, it is another diverse and soulful collection of tunes that is sure to have something for everyone. Hopefully in addition to recognizing familiar names, you are also able to discover new talent, as showcasing the underground is something we continually strive to accomplish.

Listen to all 32 tracks in the embed above, or for more info, you can go to the Bandcamp page here

  • Volumetric Slitscan Experiments by Memo Akten

The slitscan technique is a well-explored method in photography and video, but this is the first time I have seen it using a Kinect camera feed, where depth plays an additional factor. Two short videos are embedded below, and they are made more fun by the music (dancing to Nina Simone’s “My Baby Just Cares For Me”):

Taiwanese dance group perform in specially designed interactive projected space created by UltraCombo to great effect - video below:

The collaboration project between Anarchy Dance Theatre and Ultra Combos focused on building up a new viewer centered performance venue. In this space all movements including the dancers’ and audience’s can be detected and interact with each other through visual effect. The audience is not merely watching the show but actively participating in it.

  • Analogue-Monsta - BOOM

Collaborative album with Suzi Analogue and TOKiMONSTA available for the price of an email address, is 10 tracks of psychadelic electronica soul. The song playable above is called ‘Conversion Theory’.

This eclectic pair, made up of Suzi Analogue and TOKiMONSTA , is a duo of rank. Their collective background of hip-hop, psych rock, R&B and electronic has blown both minds and speakers alike. By pairing radio accessibility with radical thinking they’ve managed to created a classic with a twist hybrid that landed their very first single, NXT MSG on BBC Radio 1.

If you have been following this blog for awhile, you know that I am a fan of TOKiMONSTA, and I would say it’s definitely worth the download. I have embedded the album player below, or you can listen and download the tracks here

Both the artist’s have their own Tumblr blogs as well:

  • I Feel Love - Donna Summer

    RIP Donna Summer

I can’t say I was a huge fan or follower, but I always believed that this was one of the most important songs in dance music production history - an archetype. Sure, that is more the work of Giorgio Moroder, but the vocals on this are simple divine. When Bowie and Eno heard it, they knew it was the sound of the future.

Here is the TMZ announcement, died aged 63, from cancer.

This is (I think) the 12 inch extended version.

  • RA.306 Matthew Dear

Resident Advisor’s latest podcast mix was put together by electronic music producer Matthew Dear:

There aren’t many examples of artists who are equally as comfortable crafting esoteric minimal techno as they are standing on stage fronting a band. Having been active on the scene now for over a decade, Texas-born artist Matthew Dear has come to enjoy a unique standing within electronic music by pursuing each of his sonic interests with equal vigour. Ghostly International and its club-orientated offshoot Spectral, the imprint Dear co-founded with Sam Valenti IV at the end of the ’90s, has been the platform for most of these explorations. Countless 12-inches either under his own name or as Audion—the alias Dear frequently donned to delve into more rank strains of techno—have been put out through the label, while Minus/Plus 8 was also a regular home for his False moniker during the mid-’00s. It was in 2007 that Dear made the formative steps towards the artist we now know. The warmly received Asa Breed album saw Dear stepping out front and centre with his Big Hands band, turning to an electronic pop sound which would continue three years later on the equally as impressive Black City.

  • Perfume - MOCAP Remix

Japanese girl pop group’s website features an interactive 3D MOCAP dance animation, abstract polygon figures in a vector disco.

What is interesting is that the dance data is available from their site for anyone to remix and develop. One example is this interactive 3D javascript version that runs within the browser:

The version at Perfume’s site is worth a minute of your time, which you can see here, the data is available in the download section.

  • Girl Walk All Day

Film / extended music video (71 minutes) based around Girl Talk’s All Day mash-up album, about a girl who decides to break out and dance around New York city. An antidote to those dancing films with heavily marketing-influenced attitude:

This is the project blog of Girl Walk // All Day, a 71-minute dance music video of epic proportions, set to the tune of Girl Talk’s All Day.

The idea behind Girl Walk // All Day emerged from our desire to expand the boundaries around the idea of the traditional music video, which usually spans the length of a single track. This album-length piece will feature a talented group of dancers across a range of public and private spaces around New York City, turning the city’s sidewalks and obstacles into part of an evolving improvisational dance routine.

The piece will be available for free online in short, serialized segments and we also plan to screen the full-length film in public spaces, and at festivals, concerts, parties, and beyond — beginning in October 2011 — inspiring an interactive viewing experience that will evolve into a series of dance parties around the globe.

You can see all the separate segments of the film here. A Tumblr blog about the project can be found here.

  • RA.299 Agoria

Resident Advisor podcast mix with the aim of putting together the best Dance music of the past ten years:

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

RA approached me to do the podcast in the middle of 2011. I was interested in doing it, but I needed a direction. There were a few ideas, one of which was to make a mix of RA’s favourites by looking over the decade polls and the year-end poll from 2011. Wou! That was a big challenge, as it wouldn’t be only my own mix then, but also the vision of the website. This had to be a testimony of a period without playing only surefire hits or huge anthems of the last decade, because something like that would have been really hard to listen to. It had to paint a landscape, with different colours of the day, a summing up of the last ten years.
