  • Microcontrollers as Craft Material

High-Low Tech have put together some tools and techniques to integrate electronics into craft works:

We’ve developed a set of tools and techniques that make it easy to use microcontrollers as an art or craft material, embedding them directly into drawings or other artifacts. We use the ATtiny45 from Atmel, a small and cheap (~$1) microcontroller that can be glued directly to paper or other objects. We then construct circuits using conductive silver ink, dispensed from squeeze bottles with needle tips. This makes it possible to draw a circuit, adding lights, speakers, and other electronic components. Alternatively, you can make circuits with copper tape (as well as simple circuits without microcontrollers).

To program the microcontroller, we’ve developed a set of hardware and software tools. The TinyProgrammer plugs into the USB port of a computer and loads a program onto the microcontroller. We’ve also developed a plugin for the Arduino software that makes it easy to write the code that runs on the microcontroller. We call this set of tools an “untoolkit” because it provides the ease-of-use of other electronic toolkits but using off-the-shelf electronic components.

  • Collective Works

Design installation piece by Mischer’Traxler that can create a basket, only if someone is present. When another arrives to inspect, coloured marks are added to the outside - more visitors, more markings:

‘Collective works’ is a production process which is just fully functioning when people pay attention to the producing machine. Reacting to its audience, the process translates the flow of people into an object. The resulting outcome varies in colour and size just like the level of interest is varying during the time of production.
As soon as one person is coming close and looks at the machine, the production process is started: A wooden 24mm wide veneer-strip is pulled through a glue basin and slowly coiled up around a 20mm thick wooden base. Since the turning platform with the base moves downwards the veneer strip slowly builds up a basket. Once a second person joins to look at the process, a light tone colour is added via a marker onto the veneer. The more people come to look at the machine, the more markers are activated, each with a gradient darker tone. This goes up to four markers, at the same time, staining the veneer-strip black.

The interaction is possible due to sensors in the frame of the machine which detect the audience.Depending on the overall interaction time the baskets’ height is defined. The more often somebody stops by to watch the process the higher the outcome gets.

  • Codeable Objects

Processing coding library for designing physical objects like the ones pictured above using geometric computation:

Codeable Objects is a library for Processing that enables novice coders, designers and artists to rapidly design, customize and construct an artifact using geometric computation and digital fabrication. The programming methods provided by the library allow the user to program a variety of structures and designs with simple code and geometry. When the user compiles their code, the software outputs tool paths based on their specifications, which can be used in conjunction with digital fabrication tools to build their object.

  • The Wire Sculptures of Ruth Asawa

Synaptic Stimuli has introduced me to the artist and her works, which are both mathematical yet human from their construction.

    From the artist’s website:

Ruth Asawa is an American artist, who is nationally recognized for her wire sculpture, public commissions, and her activism in education and the arts. In San Francisco, she has been called the “fountain lady” because so many of her fountains are on public view.

When Ruth was 16, she and her family were interned along with 120,000 other people of Japanese ancestry who lived along the West Coast of the United States. For many, the upheaval of losing everything, most importantly their right to freedom and a private, family life, caused irreparable harm. For Ruth, the internment was the first step on a journey to a world of art that profoundly changed who she was and what she thought was possible in life. In 1994, when she was 68 years old, she reflected on the experience: “I hold no hostilities for what happened; I blame no one. Sometimes good comes through adversity. I would not be who I am today had it not been for the Internment, and I like who I am.”

More great examples of her work can be seen at Synaptic Stimuli here
The Artists own website can be found here

  • Hand-Drawn Holograms

    WARNING - EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED

Genuinely impressive - representational 3D forms created on plastic and etched by hand. Lots of fantastic examples, but at 1 minute 43 seconds, you will see a convincing 3D cube:

Scratch-holograms can be made upon CD/DVD cases or other soft plastic using a couple of thumbtacks poked through a stick. Or get fancy and use a professional compass and black-painted polycarbonate plates. Or automate the process with a paperclip stuck into a motorized electric eraser, or a CNC mill with a drag-engraving tool.

For lots of hints, see http://amasci.com/amateur/holohint.html Best is to use a good $10 compass, soft plastic that’s slightly greasy, and replace the extremely sharp compass needle with a small finishing nail. Clear plastic works fine, or place some dark paper behind it.

Are these genuine holograms? Abrasion holography or “Chatoyant holograms” employ the same physics as white-light or “rainbow” holograms invented by Benton at MIT. Benton holograms reflect light from a point source, and they do not require any interference pattern. This is why a Rainbow Hologram functions the same under any wavelength of illumination. The fringes of Benton holograms can have any spacing: even spacings much wider than wavelengths of light. Said another way: if the holograms on your credit cards are genuine holograms, then also “Scratch-holograms” must be genuine holograms.

William J Beaty has been doing this for years (as you will see from his Web 1.0 website), and even guides through writing how it all works and make your own.

  • Cross-Stitched Fashion Ads by Inge Jacobsen for Georg Jensen

    From Design Boom:

In her first major collaborative project, irish-danish-born, england-based artist Inge Jacobsen has reworked photographer Sebastian Faena’s autumn/winter 2011 fashion campaign for historic danish manufacturers Georg Jensen.

The artist cross-stiches over the eight photographs of the series, which features danish model Freja Beha Erichsen, navigating the divides across realistic imagery, traditional craft, and contemporary design. Jacobsen’s works compose the spring / summer 2012 campaign for the company.

  • Machine Knitting a Cosby Sweater by CRAFT via Adafruit Industries

    Cosby Meta-Sweater

Andrew has hacked a knitting machine from the 80s so that it can be used as a knitting printer:

Andrew Salomone uses a hacked knitting machine from the 80s to “print” digital images into knitted garments. At World Maker Faire New York 2011, Andrew demonstrates the knitting machine and shows off its creations including a sweater with Bill Cosby’s face.

He also created a scarf based on the representation of a music sample, the Amen Break, which he can now ‘loop’ around his neck!
