  • Shadertoy

Online coding community site to demonstrate examples of 3D graphics programming, offering smooth and interactive WebGL rendering in your browser:

Shadertoy is the first application to allow developers all over the globe to push pixels from code to screen using WebGL since 2009.

This website is the natural evolution of that original idea. On one hand, it has been rebuilt in order to provide the computer graphics developers and hobbyists with a great platform to prototype, experiment, teach, learn, inspire and share their creations with the community. On the other, the expressiveness of the shaders has arisen by allowing different types of inputs such as video or sound.

Check out many impressive examples here

    Happy Birthday, the Commodore 64!

I’ve posted about this before, but, I think it is worth sharing again to celebrate one of the most important home computers ever …

An online browser-based image converter than turns a photo into Commodore 64-style graphics.

Very easy to use, just drag-and-drop an photo (png or jpg, 2mb max) into the web page and it will convert it - see the top image, the animated gif, for a demonstration (you may need to click on it to see it).

Many thanks to the volunteers above for sending a portrait of themselves: paris87, daph-knee, everybodykiller, noo-oods, migmuffins, kevinhale, veryvaluable, zensaint and chrisdejong

You can try this out for yourself here

  • 3DCG
Japanese site appears to be 3D creative community similar to Pixiv, which hosts viewable 3D models using WebGL modern browser technology.
The above gif does not represent the quality of presentation nor the interactive functionality of the service - it is far smoother and the graphics have a higher definition. You can see the original here.
You can explore the site here - and if you look around, there are other fantastic examples.

  • Tumblr as a City, With Residents, Events, and … a Newspaper?
The Atlantic has a story about Tumblr having it’s own news site, about itself and it’s community:

About 40 percent of Americans go online to get their news. The Internet is where they find out about the latest machinations of our political leaders, read reviews of a movie they’ve been curious about, or check the weather. In short, we go online to read about what is going on offline.
But a lot happens online these days. It may be all bits and volts, but it’s not other-worldly. And that’s why a new effort by the good people at Tumblr is so exciting. Their plan, as reported in The New York Times, is to create a news site for the things that happen in the Tumblrverse. They’ve hired Chris Mohney of BlackBook Media and Jessica Bennett of the Daily Beast as editor in chief and correspondent, respectively.
Mohney describes his editorial vision for the site by comparing Tumblr to a city of 42 million (the number of Tumblrs — bigger than the population of Tokyo), and he’s got to cover what happens in that city — its ideas, trends, and, even, events.

  • Visually appealing diagram from “Computer Community”, an early study of the potential benefits of computing and network facilities (via arqueologia del futuro)
The accompanying description:

The diagram shows possible educational facilities linkages in Pimlico and South Lambeth, London. Existing and extended cable links are used to connect the computational power of the Source Schools (SS), distributing information to Primary and Secondary schools. With the adaptation of microwave and satellite relay techniques land-line communications will be allowed to deteriorate. The sender’s amd receiver’s capabilities will no longer be confined economically to the static situation - rather the emergence of invisible servicing networks will facilitate hitherto unknown freedoms of location.

  • Occupy The Hood

The growth of a community campaign that joins the Occupy Wall Street protests, representing minorities. It started as a twitter profile (@OccupyTheHood), and grew from there.

From a statement on their Facebook page:

    Description:
Occupy The Hood stands in Solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street
movement… It is imperative that the African American voice is heard
at this moment! We must not be forgotten as the world progresses to the next economical stage. We can all agree that the voices in our
communities are especially needed in this humanitarian struggle. We
