  • Prosthetic Knowledge Picks: The 3D Gif

In this submission, with the animated GIF format both celebrating it’s 25th birthday and becoming the U.S. word of the year, I take a look at some creative projects which take the 2D format and takes it into another dimensional context.

Included are ‘Gifpumper’, a community GIF collage project which can place a series of GIFs in a 3D space, ‘Animated GIF in 3D’ which displays the GIF frames spatially (bottom left image), ‘GIF 3D Gallery’ which can take a GIF and place it on a virtual gallery plinth (top image), and ‘GLGIF’ (bottom right image), a piece of code which can be set up to create a spinning GIF video wall with music.

Also included to test these projects are GIFs by a few Tumblr artists - DVDP, V5MT and Max Capacity.

  • TIMEFLY

Digital art becomes fashion in the form of real-world ponchos, with new designs by artist V5MT, as well as Kim Laughton and Aischa.

You can check out more at their website here as well as their Tumblr blog

[It’s a shame these were not out before Halloween … you could have got one of these and gone to parties as an animated gif …]

  • Kim Asendorf’s “Pixel Sorting” Code is now Open-Source

Highly creative computer artist Kim Asendorf put together a collection of images called “Mountain Tour”, one of the first noticeable examples employing a pixel sorting technique. Today, he has released the Processing code for anyone to use or build something new with. Already, there is a javascript version posted on Github.

Above are a few output examples I got with it as it is - you will need to download Processing and have some familiarity with code in the sense of knowing what goes where, but if you are inclined, it’s worth the time for creative experimentation.

Links can be found at Kim’s Tumblr post here

  • GIF 3D Gallery

Fun experimental web project by akihiko taniguchi where you can place an animated GIF onto a 3D plinth in a virtual gallery room which you can move around (controls are the same as a PC FPS, but controls are available - see picture 2 above).

You will need the URL of the GIF to be able to view it here (you cannot upload a file, but there are plenty around Tumblr and the web to try out)

The above examples are Max Capacity (you can try it out here) and V5MT (here)
[… and yes, the third image is a gif of a gif of a gif in a gif gallery …]

Try it out for yourself here - discovered via Triangulation Blog

  • Moving A Pixel

Short, simple video idea visualizing the size of a single pixel in different video resolutions, using a real-world studio and a miniature gold cube. Created by Lernert & Sander:

We were asked to make a film to show the beauty of 4K, the new digital golden standard with 4 times more pixels then HD.
We wanted to make the inversion of the Sony Bravia commercials, that tried to show all the pixels of their new HD camera’s, years ago, by throwing rubber balls from a hill in San francisco.
We thought: if this 4K resolution is so fantastic it should also be able to film just one pixel!

We created five films in which one physical golden pixel becomes exactly one digital pixel on screen. The screens come in five different sizes: 4K, 2K, HD, 720p and SD.

You can see the video in various video resolutions at the creator’s website here.
Thanks to the lovely v5mt for the heads up :)
