Tumblr Editor Picks Best GIFs of the Year

This was was a big year for a certain file format. We witnessed the 25th anniversary of the GIF, the first ever live-GIFing of presidential debates, a large-scale GIF festival and the selection of “GIF” (as a verb, as in to create a GIF file) as U.S. Word of the Year by Oxford Dictionaries.

All that, and we still can’t seem to decide how to pronounce it. (I’m a militant proponent of the soft g version — as in, Jiff — simply because that’s how the programmers who developed it pronounced it and it seems right to respect their thinking on the matter.)

Prosthetic Knowledge Picks: The 3D Gif 

In this submission, with the animated GIF format both celebrating it’s 25th birthday and becoming the U.S. word of the year, I take a look at some creative projects which take the 2D format and takes it into another dimensional context.

Included are ‘Gifpumper’, a community GIF collage project which can place a series of GIFs in a 3D space, ‘Animated GIF in 3D’ which displays the GIF frames spatially (bottom left image), ‘GIF 3D Gallery’ which can take a GIF and place it on a virtual gallery plinth (top image), and ‘GLGIF’ (bottom right image), a piece of code which can be set up to create a spinning GIF video wall with music.

Also included to test these projects are GIFs by a few Tumblr artists - DVDP, V5MT and Max Capacity.

Animated GIF in 3D 

Webtoy plays any animated GIF in 3D space in your browser, playing each frame spatially and sequentially from each other. You can use the mouse to move around and change the perspective of the animation.

The first animation above is an example used within the project. Using a GIF made from many images of a human body cross-section, the animation displayed is created from the sequence of the images - it is not a 3D model in itself, more a stack of animated frames next to each other.

You can use any GIF you have on your desktop - not all GIFs will be successful, but I tried out one of Max Capacity’s pieces which works well with the pixellated image - the effect is not too far off like a lenticular postcard.

GIF 3D Gallery 

Fun experimental web project by akihiko taniguchi where you can place an animated GIF onto a 3D plinth in a virtual gallery room which you can move around (controls are the same as a PC FPS, but controls are available - see picture 2 above).

You will need the URL of the GIF to be able to view it here (you cannot upload a file, but there are plenty around Tumblr and the web to try out)

International Teletext Art Festival - Germany 

ITAF is now going to be shown in the biggest Teletext country in Europe! There will be an exhibition at Pflueger68 starting on the 16th August - the poster (top image) uses one of Max Capacity’s entries, and to my amazement, they used on of mine for the flyers … featuring Max!

Max Capacity Interview For Empty Kingdom 

Max Capacity is from the East Bay.  Where lots of awesome things come from.  He’s done some really cool things with older ‘antiquated’ media of many different kinds lending relevance and style to ‘found’ media.

What about older media, video tapes in particular, do you find interesting?  How has your attachment to that media influenced the content you choose for your work?

The price is right! I grew up with VCRs, taping things off of my TV. I’m totally obsessed with the same stuff, even still. One of my favorite things is watching old commercials on taped television broadcasts. Now everyone is throwing all that stuff away and it’s easy for me to get my hands on.

How do you choose the colors in a piece?  You use a lot of loud, neon colors, what’s the reason for that?  Is there something in particular that such loud colors say to you?

I guess the world is kinda grey and boring. It seems like my memories are more vivid than reality. Plus I’m probably influenced by old punk and new wave art and skateboard and video game art. Also cartoons. I was a kid in the 80s.

yooouuutuuube - Present YouTube videos in a zoetrope style

yooouuutuuube has been around for a few years now, but can still present YouTube videos in an interesting way. You give it a Youtube URL, specify the size of each frame, plus a few effects that could be chosen if wished. What happens then is each frame is presented in a sequence across the screen. Should you wish for something more trippy, there is the ‘flux’ option which moves all these frames around randomly.

The images above are taken from putting Max Capacity’s “TOXIC SUPER FREAKOUT 09/21/11” video upload, and, with this, works really well.
