  • Extract: How is hip-hop like the microchip?

Both grew out of communities that were innovation hotbeds—the microchip from Silicon Valley and hip-hop from the Bronx.

By building primitive song mixers, constructing speakers out of trash cans and hacking power from street lights, early MCs in the 1970s’ Bronx demonstrated problem solving, risk taking and creativity, inventing a new style of American music. The Smithsonian studies how inventive communities form and impact culture.

  • The Pizzoetrope: How to Recreate an Animated GIF on a Pizza
Make Magazine want to go viral on Tumblr … HARD!!! So, someone has put together a tutorial where you can combine the zoetrope animation technique … with pizza …

It’s hard to ignore the popularity of pizza and animated GIFs on the internet, especially on social networking sites like Tumblr. The Pizzoetrope is a device that brings pizza, animated GIFs, and social networking together in one elegant dish. As the name suggests, The Pizzoetrope is basically a zoetrope that is created on a pizza by using the toppings to make the images in the animation. Animated GIFs from the internet can be used as a template for decorating the Pizzoetrope and the finished pizza can be used as a catalyst for social networking by sharing it with friends or having a Pizzoetrope party!

A step-by-step guide to create this can be found here

  • Downloadable Furniture (via Tree Hugger)

A collection of furniture, collectively called ‘Inside Out Furniture’, whose instructions can be downloaded and can be made with local resources.

    From the designers, Minale Maeda:

DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY TO BE DOWNLOADABLE IN ORDER TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES RELATED TO TRANSPORT, COSTS OF STOCKKEEPING AND EXPLORE COLLABORATIVE DESIGN AND DISTRIBUTION, THIS FURNITURE CAN BE EDITED IN SIZE AND MATERIALS, IS MADE ON LOCATION OR CAN BE SELF-MADE BY DOWNLOADING THE BLUEPRINTS. THE CONCEPT WAS TO TURN THE PIECES INSIDE OUT TO MAKE CONSTRUCTION SIMPLE, WHILE BRACKETS AND STRUCTURAL DETAILS BECOME DISTINCTIVE AND ATTRACTIVE FEATURES. THE CONNECTIONS ARE 3D PRINTED TO SUIT VARIOUS SIZES OF WOOD, AND THE CRAFTING IS MINIMAL REQUIRING ONLY CUTTING TO LENGTH AND DRILLING.

Simple idea, though a shame that the connection parts have to be 3D printed.

  • iModela 3D Milling Machine Creates Tiny Figures on Your Desktop via Technabob

Small, compact milling machine can fit on your desktop, carve out your own toys / trinkets / Inception-like totems:

3D printers and mills are finally getting to the point where regular Joes can afford them, so it’s only natural that they start by targeting them at kids. Japanese company Roland DG has announced a tiny 3D milling machine called the iModela iM-01 that looks really awesome.
The iModela costs about $1,000(USD), definitely not a kid-friendly price. For that price, you get a device that is nice and compact for your computer desk and uses a USB connection to access the associated software for the 3D models you want to make. Basically, it allows you to make your own action figures, milling them from plastic, wax, balsa wood, or foam.

  • Enough Already: The Arduino Solution to Overexposed Celebs via MAKE

With a bit of technical knowledge, a system has been hacked together to put the television on mute when a key name of an over-exposed celebrity (ie Kardashian) is mentioned. The system doesn’t use voice recognition - it relies on the closed-captions (subtitles) feed, and once one is recognized, the television mutes for 30 seconds. If that name is mentioned again in the caption feed, the timer is reset.

  • DIY Laser-Cut Camera (via MAKE)

The KDS-POTO2 camera by Kit Man of kit da studio is over the top. Assembled from laser-cut acrylic parts and scavenged lenses, this fully functional manual film camera takes interesting pictures reminiscent of an analog Hipstamtic or DIY Lomo and seems like it would be a blast to assemble. The best part is that, being the cool guy that he is, Kit also includes an AI file so you can cut out your own. How cool is that? [via DIYP]

  • Drawdio: Turn Almost Anything Into a Theremin

May have posted this before, but its worth looking at again:

Imagine you could draw musical instruments on normal paper with any pencil (cheap circuit thumb-tacked on) and then play them with your finger. The Drawdio circuit-craft lets you MacGuyver your everyday objects into musical instruments: paintbrushes, macaroni, trees, grandpa, even the kitchen sink…

One day I bought a “harmonium” kit at the street market in Bangalore. I hacksawed the keyboard off to make the first ever Drawdio circuit. We played with it at a local school in the slums using plants, water, our foreheads, etc. My friend told me graphite would work too. Meditating on it, I realized the Drawdio circuit should be literally attached to a pencil to “draw audio,” and that’s where the name came from: Draw + Audio.

DIY: Make it. Remix it. Play it.

  • Minecraft.print

MIT project that allows you to create a 3D printable template from your Minecraft constructions

    Step 1: Play it

Make Stuff! You know how to build things in Minecraft. However, if you need inspiration on what things you could build… How about the enterprise, a train station, or Reddit’s creative server? It’s really up to you. Just make it awesome, ok?

    Step 2: Prep it

To avoid printing the entire world, it is necessary to specify the region you wish to process. By placing a combination of specific blocks (obsidian, diamond, gold, iron) at two points you can define the 3 dimensional area to print.
    Two words of warning.

    Step 3: Print it

Minecraft.Print() then outputs a standard model file for printing to either a professional 3D printer or (MakerBot or RepRap). Now that you’ve printed out your creation, it’s time to show it off. We figure you know how to do this part.
