PK Mixtape 2012

2) Zenthial Arches - Team Doyobi (00:06 - 03:12)
3) Ye Ye - Daphni - JIAOLONG (03:12 - 09:17)
4) The Nightcaller - Flying Lotus (09:17 - 12:44)
5) Conversion Theory - Analogue Monsta (12:44 - 16:00)
6) Locked - Four Tet (16:00 - 24:18)
7) I Feel Love (12” Version) - Donna Summer (24:18 - 32:19)
8) Flutes - Hot Chip - In Our Heads (32:19 - 39:22)
9) Ricky’s Theme - Beastie Boys - Ill Communication (39:24 - 43:03)
10) Eclipse/Blue feat. Kazu Makino - Nosaj Thing (43:04 - 47:07)
11) Bamboo Music - David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto (47:07 - 52:13)
I felt like making another mixtape (just as I did last year), as … why the hell not. I’m no mixtape god so don’t expect anything masterful or comprehensive. I have to admit I wasn’t so into music this year, but thats not to say there was nothing worth attention. I hope, at least, there will be something anyone can appreciate.
1) Atari Video Game Logo - Suzanne Ciani
Taken from the “Lixiviation” album released by Finders Keepers Records, a compilation of examples and works by an electronic music pioneer.
2) Zenthial Arches - Team Doyobi
Taken from “Digital Music Volume 1” on Skam Records, a worthwhile addition to anyone who likes contemporary electronic music.
3) Ye Ye - Daphni - JIAOLONG
A solo effort from Daniel Victor Snaith, who also made the excellent “Swim” under the guise of Caribou.
4) The Nightcaller - Flying Lotus
Taken from “Until The Quiet Comes”, the album is generally mellower than his previous outings, yet still has plenty to offer.
5) Conversion Theory - Analogue Monsta
Any release from TOKiMONSTA is always something I look forward to: a collaborative album with Suzi Analogue available for the price of an email address, is 10 tracks of psychadelic electronica soul. More Here
6) Locked - Four Tet
Taken from a compilation album of 12” releases, all enjoyable
7) I Feel Love (12” Version) - Donna Summer
2012 saw the passing of Donna Summer from cancer. For me, she will always be important for this track she made with Giorgio Morodor, released in 1977. A true archetype of popular electronic music which has withstand time (and employed a production hack to get it’s new sound as the technology at the time could not perform the way it does), noticed by Bowie and Eno as the sound of the next 15 years, can be played pretty much anywhere. RIP
8) Flutes - Hot Chip
From the ‘In Our Heads’ album, which I would say was mixed. However, I think this track is one of their best ever, and probably my most played tracks this year.
9) Ricky’s Theme - Beastie Boys
2012 also claimed the life of Adam Yauch aka MCA of the Beastie Boys (again, from cancer) at the age of 47 :( It was very sad news. Everyone here should know all the Beastie Boys classics, but here I decided something different, something that stood out for me from their ‘Ill Communication” album, a jazzy instrumental. RIP
10) Eclipse/Blue feat. Kazu Makino - Nosaj Thing
When I heard Nosaj Thing was going to release new material this year, I couldn’t wait. His Drift album was fantastic. Sadly, it was only this track that was released, and I can’t wait to hear new material in 2013.
11) Bamboo Music - David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto
My favourite release this year was not a commercial one - it was a compilation from the Root Blog called ‘野生の野望’ featuring 80’s Japanese electronic pop music related to musicians of the band Yellow Magic Orchestra. A wide range of music which until now I had a lack of knowledge of. More about the compilation (and links to get it) can be found here.
I hope you enjoy it :)

PK Mixtape 2011 - Tracks | Tributes | Discoveries

After sharing loads of mixes on this Tumblr blog, I thought I would have a go at making one myself - this is actually the first time I have attempted a digital one, so if you spot any flaws - that’s why. I’m not a sound engineer, nor am I a DJ, and I didn’t see any need to create some sort of end-of-2011 list as there are more experienced and knowledgeable people who do that. If anyone has some constructive criticism, feel free to let me know …
This is a collection of tracks that have been played a lot on my iPod Touch, some things I have shared on this Tumblr blog that have been of interest, and some tributes to people who have passed away this year, or the anniversary of their passing.
TRACKLIST:
01) Ant City - Kuedo (2011) [00:00:00]
Great atmospheric album - like Nosaj Thing went back to the early 80s, kidnapped Vangelis to make another sci-fi soundtrack with an 808 drum machine
02) Separator - Radiohead (2011) [00:03:11]
Last track to their ‘King Of Limbs’ album
03) VCR (Four Tet Remix) - The XX (2010) [00:08:26]
I rebloged this from notational - someone who I have been following for ages who, among the other things he does, has good taste in music
04) Bright Shadows - TOKiMONSTA (2011) [00:16:44]
From her ‘Creature Dreams’ EP released this year
05) Confusion - DJ Soulscape Feat. 각나그네 (2003) [00:20:26]
Musical curiosity has led me to this Korean Hip-Hop DJ (I’ve posted two of his mixes here + here) and very recently received a couple of his albums. This track is one of two on this mix that appear from his ‘Lovers’ album. I don’t understand a word being said, but the delivery and production is great.
06) Le Corbeau Et Le Renard - Dynastie Crisis (1970) [00:25:59]
Posted earlier this year, the French prog-rock band Dynastie Crisis, who didn’t get any recognition in their time, produced a track which to modern ears sounds like Hip-Hop … all the way back in 1970 …
07) Push Me Pull You - Futurisk (1982) [00:28:44]
I somehow managed to come across the musical genre ‘Synth Punk’, and I love this jam …
08) Futura - Battles (2011) [00:31:04]
From their ‘Gloss Drop’ album
09) Trapped - Boards Of Canada (1995) [00:37:17]
A catchy remix allegedly put together by the Boards of Canada (under the pseudonym Hell Interface, found on one of their mixtapes (video here)
10) Gratitude - Acoustic Ladyland (2009) [00:40:49]
Discovered this on a mix for an ATP event in London curated by Portishead. The track is taken from their album ‘Living WIth A Tiger’, an instrumental rock album that tests how the saxaphone can be a lead instrument in the genre. I enjoyed it.
11) Me And The Devil - Gil Scott-Heron (2010) [00:45:02]
RIP to the guy who wrote ‘The Television Will Not Be Televised’ amongst others …
12) Always Crashing In The Same Car - David Bowie (1977) [00:48:33]
Somehow late to the party, I bought Bowie’s ‘Low’ album this year - besides, you can’t really go wrong with putting Bowie in a mixtape …
13) I Just Want To - Reggie Watts (2009) [00:52:00]
Just a great track put together on the spot - it is probably better appreciated on the video (which you can see here)
14) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service - John Barry (????) [00:55:22]
A composer who did have a talent for bringing style and drama to the films he worked on … RIP
15) Another One Bites Da Funk - Daft Queen (2009 redo, originally 2003) [00:58:01]
Earlier this year, Google celebrated Freddie Mercury’s would-be birthday in one of their doodle’s, it was also the 20th anniversary of his passing. I wouldn’t say I was a Queen fan, but looking now he was a great talent and personality, something sadly lacking in modern times. This mash-up with Freddie’s vocals escalates the fun factor of the original (you can get the track here)
16) Jasmine - DJ Soulscape Feat. 청안 (2003) [01:01:55]
Last track on this mix is another one from DJ Soulscape’s ‘Lovers’ album, a simple upbeat track to end on. I still have no idea what is being said …
This mix is posted on Soundcloud, so if you would rather hear it there, click here

Yosi Horikawa - Live from Tokyo (via Percussion Lab)

Part of Percussion Lab’s ‘Tokyo: State of Mind’ series, here is a mix of the work of Yosi Horikawa, an up and coming producer who works with found sounds.
To me, he sounds like the Japanese answer to Four Tet - recommended:
Rhythm Incursion’s Laurent Fintoni ‘discovered’ Yosi Horikawa by way of the French producer Fulgeance (French producer). Working primarily with found sounds/recordings, Yosi’s music has a pristine aesthetic sense that is both subtle and entrancing. This mix highlights his productions, which are featured Eklektik Records (FR) and on Japan’s Low Vibes label. He’s also a member of this year’s Red Bull Music Academy Class, so this is quite a special mix from the up and coming producer.

Solid Steel Radio Show 2/9/2011 Part 1 + 2 - Fourtet
This week we welcome back Fourtet who had his first mix on Solid Steel 10 years ago, back in 2001. He was also part of a North American Solid Steel tour that year alongside DJ Food, DK and Bonobo. They all regrouped after the tour back at BBC London for a Solid Steel show spinning records bought only on that tour (Those signed up to the mailing list will be getting a download link for that classic show). His mix celebrates the forthcoming release of his Fabric Live CD and we get a taste of some of the tracks included, with music from Michael Redolfi, Crazy Bald Heads and KMA, plus new music from Fourtet himself.

The XX VCR (Four Tet Remix) via notational:
Lovely. Totally up my alley these days. Fourtet remixing the XX.
Burial - Ego (New 2011 track)
You may have heard about a Burial / Four Tet / Thom Yorke collaboration.
Well, apparently, this is it, recorded off the radio.
Is it me, or does the new Radiohead album remind anyone of Four Tet?
Four Tet and Caribou has been on heavy rotation on my music player this year. Here is a sweet set from them playing back to back at the Moogfest in Asheville, USA. Recommended download!
No tracklist unfortunately :( - via Core News
