  • Litterae Finis

Textmode demoscene winner of TDMC 2012 put together by Trauma - very impressive stylistically rendering 3D objects in ASCII.

    Video embedded below:

Alternatively, you can download the demo yourself at Pouet here (it is much much better than the video above, sharper and cleaner, Windows only).

  • ShapeItUp

Proof of concept tech for 3D modelling using a gestural interface:

We present a novel interaction system, “Shape-It-Up”, for creative expression of 3D shapes through the naturalistic integration of human hand gestures with a modeling scheme dubbed intelligent generalized cylinders (IGC). To achieve this naturalistic integration, we propose a novel paradigm of shape-gesture-context interplay (SGCI) wherein the interpretation of gestures in the spatial context of a 3D shape directly deduces the designers’ intent and the subsequent modeling operations.

A 3D engine developed by demogroup Crescent for the Commodore 64, which has a kind of minimalist beauty in itself - video embedded below:

This is a simple raycaster for our beloved C64 featuring the following:

    - Size of one C64 disk block (254 bytes)
    - Joystick controlled (port 2)
    - Simple collision detection
    - 256 step rotation in 2 PI
    - Open (wrapped) and closed map areas

  • DUO

A low cost open-Source DIY 3D motion sensor to become another alternative to the Kinect:

The DUO is the world’s first and only DIY 3D sensing solution.

The DUO comes in many forms: with open hardware plans, molded cases, kits and fully assembled devices. All paired with an open source Driver, SDK and examples. Resulting in a professional grade solution for 3D sensing using stereo vision.

The best part is it’s extremely easy to use, just plug it in, download the software and you can start playing within minutes. If you can wave in the air you can use a DUO.

  • Digital Merzbau

Chinese project combines art, 3D printing, geometry and recursion:

Merzbau is a project by a German artist Kurt Schwitters began in 1923 in Hanover for a series of room transformation of his house. With art of collage, restructuring process, he re-used the discarded building materials from which made into furniture, walls to ceiling, creating a form of decorative and structural integration, basically following a certain design rules. Today, in the computational context, we tried to create a series of our own logic from the prototype “Merzbau”.

  • 3D-printed Music

Short, sweet, and simple demonstration of the motors of a 3D printer playing music:

NO PRINTER WHERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS HACK!
(however this doesn’t mean that yours won’t be, use at own risk)

At art hack day in Stockholm 2013 and using a Lulzbot 3D-printer I tried to visualize
    different classical musical pieces.

The project explores the alternative uses of 3D-printers. It’s being used to create
unique art by printing classical pieces of music while at the same time acting as
an instrument and performing the music itself.

The stepper motors controlling the movement can be run at different speeds,
the speed decides the pitch of the sound and makes it possible for the motors to make music.

An episode of the popular cartoon has been leaked (and lost) written and directed by the incredibly talented animator David O’Reilly, fully rendered in 3D and featuring many crazy glitch / net-art styles.

I say it appears to already be taken down, but it was located here

UPDATE: It’s on YouTube!!! Thanks Dubi!

  • Shadertoy

Online coding community site to demonstrate examples of 3D graphics programming, offering smooth and interactive WebGL rendering in your browser:

Shadertoy is the first application to allow developers all over the globe to push pixels from code to screen using WebGL since 2009.

This website is the natural evolution of that original idea. On one hand, it has been rebuilt in order to provide the computer graphics developers and hobbyists with a great platform to prototype, experiment, teach, learn, inspire and share their creations with the community. On the other, the expressiveness of the shaders has arisen by allowing different types of inputs such as video or sound.

From the Prosthetic Knowledge inbox, from Felix Pels:

    Hi there,

I check in with the Prosthetic Knowledge blog every now and again and really like what you post on there.

I figured that you’d probably like the video by High Contrast. Very glitchy

No commercial relation with High Contrast or the like, just the aesthetic seemed relevant for your style.

A music video that employs various art-tech methods and references, a cocktail of databending, glitch, vhs video, 8Bit graphics and sprites, 3D, Net Art - all put together well, worth a look if you like this sort of stuff. Video embedded below:

    Thanks Felix :)

  • 3Doodler

In case you missed this the past couple of days, an impressive handheld 3D printing pen, allowing to draw in three dimensions. Video embedded below:

Have you ever just wished you could lift your pen off the paper and see your drawing become a real three dimensional object? Well now you can!

3Doodler is the world’s first and only 3D Printing Pen. Using ABS plastic (the material used by many 3D printers), 3Doodler draws in the air or on surfaces. It’s compact and easy to use, and requires no software or computers. You just plug it into a power socket and can start drawing anything within minutes.

Oh, and it’s also the most affordable way to 3D print… by a looong way! With 3Doodler we’re making fun 3D creation accessible to everyone.

Minecraft Reality lets you combine Minecraft worlds with the real world! Using advanced computer vision, Minecraft Reality maps and tracks the world around you using the camera, and allows you to place Minecraft worlds in reality, and even save them in a specific location for others to look at. You can also upload your own Minecraft worlds at http://minecraftreality.com and place these in reality.

    Minecraft Reality lets you:

    - View Minecraft worlds tied to reality using advanced computer vision and augmented reality
    - Find Minecraft worlds that others have placed in locations nearby
    - Upload your own Minecraft worlds at http://minecraftreality.com
    - Share screenshots of Minecraft worlds in reality to Facebook and Twitter

Powered by PointCloud SDK (http://pointcloud.io) which lets you map and track 3D spaces using SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping).

  • Sketchfab

Free online service which can display your uploaded 3D files within your browser with WebGL, interactive and embeddable:

Sketchfab is a web service to publish interactive 3D content online in real-time without plugin. The world we live in is in 3D, but the web is still in 2D, and we want to change that. We think your 3D models deserve something better than screenshots or “showreel” videos. That’s why we created Sketchfab. We understand 3D and bring it to the web.

As well as displaying items in a webpage, they are also embeddable - here are a couple of examples below:
