  • SOFTWARE - An Exhibition (1970)

Fascinating art catalogue of an exhibition which explores the creative potential of communication technologies, with ideas and approaches which are relevant today.

    Some hightlights:

The first three images above refer to a project called ‘Seek’ by M.I.T. featuring an enclosed space filled with toy blocks that are placed by a robotic hand. Also inside are some gerbals who navigate themselves around the changing environment they find themselves in.

“Notes on art and information processing” essay by Jack Burnham is worth a read, with some great highlighted quotes.

“The Crafting of Media” brief essay by Theodor H. Nelson also has some interesting points, inventing the term ‘cybercrud’ to refer to information shared to one another via computer, and the first time (I have heard) the term ‘hypergram’ used a visual relation to hypertext, which could be best understood in the way a photo in Facebook or Flick is tagged with additional information which is referenceable within it.

    Tactile Film by Linda Berris.

There are many others (various sound art projects, one which employs solar panels), even conceptual billboard work.

  • South Korea 1970s [Part 2] - Turntable Lab Radio 008: DJ Soulscape

Part two takes us to a podcast featuring a live vinyl turntable mix of 70s music by DJ Soulscape. I’ve previously posted a Hip-Hop mix by the DJ, but he has also been a keen representative of Korea’s music past, as shown by The Creators Project. Since the Korean War, as foreign occupancy was present, the brought with them many cultural artifacts, such as pop music. This mix is a collection of music which is obviously influenced by that - funk, soul, and psyche rock - and there are some great discoveries here.

Two posts related to South Korea culture from the 1970s - first, a new exhibition in Seoul has photographs and installations recreating shops of the time.

  • Sony cube TR-1825

Classic piece of product design from Sony in 1970:

Released in 1970, when Sony had become the first Japanese company to list shares on the New York Stock Exchange. Sliding the faces on this cubic radio reveals a speaker in front and controls on top, a unique design at the time. One version of its packaging commemorates the World Expo in Osaka, held in March that year, and many expo-goers picked up the radio as a gift.

  • Dynastie Crisis ‘Le Corbeau et Le Renard’ [1970]

I mentioned earlier this week about a 1970s French rock band called Dynastie Crisis who, from the music I’ve heard, sound fantastic, but their music didn’t seem to be available easily anywhere.

Anyway, I discovered this track on YouTube today and was blown away … its HIP-HOP BEFORE HIP-HOP! And it was released the same year as Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised’!

It isn’t lame white-boy rap either! Bona-fide and impressive

  • Pixillation by Lillian Schwartz (1970) - early computer animated film (4 minutes)

“With computer-produced images and Moog-synthesized sound Pixillation is in a sense an introduction to the electronics lab. But its forms are always handsome, its colors bright and appealing, its rhythms complex and inventive.” - Roger Greenspun, N. Y. Times. Golden Eagle-Cine 1971. Moog sound by Gershon Kingsley; Version III: pulls the viewer into a primal experience. Awards:Red Ribbon Award for Special Effects from The National Academy of Television, Arts & Sciences; The Smithsonian Institution and The United States Department of Commerce, Travel Services for Man & His World at the Montreal Expo, ‘71; collection The Museum of Modern Art. Damn cool retro soundtrack to Japanese movie Delinquent Girl Boss - think of the music used in the second half of Kill Bill Volume One (‘Lady Snowblood’ track “The Flower of Carnage” by Meiko Kaji.)

  • Yetke - Zafer Dilek

    http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products/z/zzbmusiccrosscontinen_101b.jpg

B-Music has been a long running music night featuring favourite musical treasures from around the world by some of the most respected DJs in the world. Some can sound crazy, some have a groove, its music that your parents would have liked if they lived in another country. Exotic and refreshing.

I have found very little information regarding this track, as far as I can make out, its a popular rock track from the 1970s in Turkey. Has a great groove and an exotic riff - the cultural differences is what makes these collections of tracks very welcoming.
