This natural rock portal, called a “Gate” by the Japanese, was photographed by others as well, and even appears on old postcards right through the 1920s-30s.

Although I cannot pinpoint the exact location of this formation, the area around Mitake is famous for its boulders. Today, those who are fans of “bouldering” are drawn to the area. Please follow the links here for more about the area :
